Can I Foster If I Have a Criminal Record

A lot of people worry that something in their past will automatically stop them from fostering.

The simple answer is no, having a criminal record does not always mean you cannot foster.

Our local councils do not use a “one rule fits all” approach. Instead, every application is looked at carefully on its own.

What matters most is things like:

  • what the offence was
  • how long ago it happened
  • how old you were at the time
  • what your life is like now
  • whether it was a one off or part of a pattern
  • how things have changed since then

The main question is always: Is this a safe and stable home for a child today?

Checks are part of the process

When you apply to foster, you will go through background checks. This includes an enhanced DBS check. These checks help the team understand your history, but they are only one part of the decision. They do not decide everything on their own.

You will also have conversations with a social worker so you can explain your story and talk honestly about your life now.

Being honest is important

If you do have a criminal record or cautions, it is important to be open about it early on in your enquiry. This is not about judging you. It is about understanding your past properly and making sure you get the right support during your assessment.

Lots of people worry their past will stop them, but that is not always true, especially if it was a long time ago and things in your life are very different now.

What really matters

Fostering is about giving children a safe, caring and stable home.

The assessment looks at who you are now, not just what happened in the past. Everyone has a story, and what matters most is how you are today and the difference you could make to a child.

Still unsure? Let’s talk

If you are unsure whether your past might affect your application, it is always best to ask. Get in touch.

One of our recruitment coordinators can talk it through with you in a simple and friendly way. You do not have to commit to anything; you can just get advice.
