Can LGBTQ+ people foster?

LGBTQ couple fostering children

Fostering is about providing a safe, stable, and caring home for a child who can’t live with their own family. Children come into care for many different reasons, and what they need most is someone who can offer patience, understanding, and support.

Fostering can look different in every home, but at its heart, it’s about helping children feel secure, valued, and cared for during a time of uncertainty.

If you’re lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, non-binary, or identify in another way, you might have wondered whether fostering is something open to you. The simple answer is: yes, absolutely.

You don’t need to fit a specific mould to foster. Whether you’re lesbian, gay, queer, trans, bisexual, or non-binary, your ability to care for a child is what matters. Our local councils are looking for people from all backgrounds and experiences, because children in care come from all walks of life too.

The strengths you bring

Being part of the LGBTQ+ community can bring unique strengths to fostering. Many lesbian, gay, queer, and trans people understand what it’s like to feel different, to navigate challenges around identity, or to build a sense of belonging.

These experiences can help you connect with children who may be feeling uncertain, anxious, or out of place.

Supporting LGBTQ+ young people in care

There are also children and young people in care who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, or questioning their identity. For them, having a foster carer who is accepting, understanding, or who shares similar life experiences can be incredibly reassuring. It can help them feel seen, valued, and safe to be who they are.

Application process

It’s completely normal to have questions or worries. Will I be accepted? Will the process be different? The good news is that fostering assessments are focused on your ability to meet a child’s needs and, your sexuality or gender identity is not a barrier. What matters is your commitment, your home environment, and your willingness to learn and grow.

You also won’t be doing it alone. When you foster, you become part of a wider support network, including social workers, other foster carers, and local teams who are there to guide you every step of the way.

Making a difference

Fostering is about being there for a child when they need it most. It’s about offering stability, encouragement, and care, helping them to feel safe and supported.

Your identity is not a barrier, it’s part of what makes you, you and that could be exactly what a child needs.
