A question that many ask when they get in contact with us is, can I work and foster? Many are under the impression that foster care is only for those that have retired or aren’t working. The truth, however, is that you can work and foster. In fact, many people do this.
There are many local authority foster carers that are working in a wide range of careers. There are few limitations to working and fostering, but hopefully these common questions and answers will help.
How many hours can I work?
The priority is that you have the available time and flexibility to put the child’s needs first. This means you need to be able to attend essential commitments. This includes dropping off and picking up from school and attending review meetings and appointments.
Does it matter what shifts I work?
Again, it is all about flexibility and availability. If you are concerned about this, we would be happy to talk through it with you.
Are there any jobs I can’t do when fostering?
No, there isn’t a restriction on the type of job you do.
To work and foster you simply need to put the needs of the child first. This means you need to be flexible enough to be able to attend commitments like review meetings or family time, be available for situations where the child needs you, for example if they fall ill. If you are looking after a child who is of school age you must also be available to do school drop offs and pickups.
Many employers have a ‘fostering friendly policy’ so why not check this out with your workplace or organisation.
As you can see, it is more than possible to work and foster. If however, you are still unsure, get in touch with our friendly hub who will be more than happy to advise on your eligibility. You can do so by calling 0300 019 0200 or by completing our enquiry form.
